Keep Control Of Your Own Website

Many people new to internet marketing are tempted to sign up with ready made websites to get them started. This is an excellent way to get going with a business as there is so much to learn about creating your own website that a ready made site makes sense.

However, always make sure it is hosted on your own domain. There are good ready made websites that will help you set this up and it is far better than relying on hosting that someone else controls. There are plenty of good low cost hosting companies though some are more helpful than others.
You may not realise it when you first start but you will need access to your own website within a short time. Otherwise you are dependent on whoever owns the site to upload tracking code for such as Google analytics and Yahoo site search.

If you start a website without control and the site becomes a success it is too late to get control back, you will be stuck with relying on someone else to access the website for you.
Similarly if the website is hosted and controlled by someone else and they go out of business your website is gone. You must keep ultimate control. So find a low cost hosting company that is recommended by someone and has shown to be helpful to new inexperienced website owners.

The best ready made websites come with an admin panel which makes most tasks easy with no html editing required but as it is hosted on your own domain it is still accessible if you need to add code outside the admin panel.

There are numerous ready made solutions, some coming as a completely stocked ebook website, or a ready to go software website, and others that make it easy to create any type of niche website with an easy way to monetize the site with affiliate links. You must though ensure that you have direct access to the website if you need it. If the site is hosted by someone else but gives you complete access to it (cpanel, ftp access etc) then maybe that will be alright though you still run the risk of the company that owns it going out of business so you need to ensure you can transfer the website to your own domain if you want to at a later date.

Personally I prefer control of the website from day one, and if you need help with setting it up, buy the ready made website from a company that will help you, either at no cost or at a small reasonable cost.

A sample of good ready made websites is listed below together with a link to the hosting company that is recommended by the producers of these products due to the help with uploading and configuring that the hosting company provides. However you may find other good products online or through recommendations, just make sure that in every case they give you control of your website and you should be fine.

Internet Marketing Software that does not work!

What a week, there I am trying to get a list of things done with my web marketing business and end up stopped at every turn.

First I tried to update my footer ad software which promptly stopped working and no amount of changes and configuration could get it working again, so gave up on that.

Next I saw an amazing piece of software called Incredipoptoons which looked really impressive amd I intended adding it to many of my sites. However I need to run it on blogs and haven’t been able to get it working yet. There is a video tutorial for using it but that assumes you’re installing it on a normal html website and unfortunately installing it on a blog (php site) is not straightforward. So another bunch of money down the drain.

Lastly tried to install peel ads which I’d had for a while without using, and that wouldn’t install either.

One thing I often find with software is that sometimes when instructions are given, there is a little information about permission settings to change, but I have not yet come across any software in 2 years where the developer has listed all the correct file settings. They must assume that the original file settings will be correct but ftp software can change these settings during upload. It would be a relatively simple thing for a developer to go through the files and list the permission (chmod) settings for all files, but they don’t, and it has caused me a whole heap of problems.

So, only one thing for it, I’ll have to write my own scripts to do what I want.

The old adage, if you want it done properly, do it yourself, certainly often rings true.

I’d be interested to hear about any more frustrating problems others have faced.

Cam Studio v Camtasia

Hello,

A long time since I posted and this topic is part of the reason.

I have been trying to sort out video creation to use in my upcoming ebook and had many problems. In the hope it will help anyone else I’ve just jotted a few comments about it all below:

I first downloaded Camtasia on a free month’s trial. It seems to be the recommended tool used by most internet marketers. However I had some problems with the audio. I have noticed on many videos I watch on the web that the audio can be low. After trying Camtasia I realised it is the result of all the filtering you can put in to cut out background noise. Which of course is excellent that you have these tools and there may have been ways to compensate for the low audio, however because I had so many other work commitments I ran out of time on the trial before I had it working right. The question was then did I want to pay $300 and risk not getting it working?

So I decided to try CamStudio which is available as a free download (it is based on an earlier version of Camtasia but has had improvements since). I soon realised that the audio problems I was having was a result of my computer hardware. I searched on the net and found much discussion about it, tried a new headset/microphone, and finally realised that the background noise was down to my soundcard. As I was using a laptop this was potentially a problem but fortunately I had another slightly older laptop which I was able to try and thankfully with this I can produce noise free videos.

Anyway as CamStudio works perfectly and IMPORTANTLY has a new release which corrects a bug which stopped flash working properly in web browsers, I have no reason to pay for CamTasia and can recommend anyone to try CamStudio.

An important point from the whole saga is that your computer hardware is vitally important if you want to create good quality noise free videos. If you use a desktop computer then you can easily upgrade the soundcard but if like me you use laptops then you may need to research if you have problems. At least now you can use a free tool instead of paying out a lot of money and then finding your equipment isn’t up to the job.

Hello again, finally got round to my blog again, it’s been a hectic week, up and down the country on my engineering job, roll on the time I can retire to a beach doing Internet Marketing………….

A Word Of Caution

Hello again,

As the heading says, this post is a word of caution, and I’m sure most of you are better with this, but I sometimes get carried away when editing websites etc and don’t back up as often as I should! Almost destroyed my blog. Fortunately the page I corrupted was the main index page and I was able to cut and paste the code from the original theme index page as it hadn’t changed. What a relief.

So the moral of this is, don’t do what i do, do as JohnThornhill advises you, and back up everything regularly. I hope I learn the lesson this time.

Anyway the reason I was editing was to add my first Ultimate Footer Ad, which is the sign up to my blog. Hope you like it. If anyone wants to get this software you can find it at the link below:

Promo Buddy – Organise Your IM Resources

Hello again,

A little while back I ran a post about organising your hard drive (or mine to be precise!). Well, I still haven’t, but I have come across something to help me.

It’s a software program called ‘Promo Buddy’ by Detlev Reimer and it looks like it will do everything I need. You can enter just about any data you want, from websites with all the information you may want to refer to such as DNS settings, date domain was purchased, host, cost, etc etc, plus a one click link to open the website, also articles including the article itself, title, resource box data etc, then there’s an area for entering details of products, sales, customers etc, each individual category opens up a page to enter all the data in.

The program is free, just requires signing up to the newsletter, well worth it for a program as useful as this.

If you decide to try it I hope it proves useful. I’m sure it will help me. One final note is that it is a Windows program, for most people that won’t be a problem. I use linux most of the time but do keep a copy of WinXP I can bring up in a virtual window when I need it, and for a program as useful as this I’m prepared to do that. Fingers crossed I may even get all my Internet Marketing material organised at last!
