Hard Drive Housekeeping

Hello again,

I hope your week has started well. Mine got off to a dodgy start as I was stuck on the motorway for 3 hours, but then in UK thats not all that unusual, many accidents and holdups through roadworks.

Anyway, I digress, this post is a quick one about hard-drive housekeeping. Maybe most of you are better at this than me, but I need to sit down and sort out my hard drive. I need a structured way of finding everything I need quickly, with my website data and backups tidily sorted so I can readily work on my websites without having to search all over my computer. Easier said than done though, especially when I’m often in a hurry. So if anyone has any tips, feel free to let me know (admin@dave-smith.org), though I think at the end of the day I just need to be a bit more disciplined.

One thing I do intend to do is to set up a web disk area on one of my websites (this is a private disk area you can just use yourself) and use it to store important data for my business in case my laptop ever gets stolen or crashes (less likely to crash as I use linux as my main operating system with windows only used to test and use software that only runs on windows). I do recommend any of you to do this if you have a website. Although I store copies of data on spare physical hard drives, having your important data on a server elsewhere (but crucially under your own control) is a very good way of safeguarding it.

Well, thats all for now. Have a good week and good luck with anything you do.

Dave Smith
